The roof is our first line of defense against harsh weather conditions and other elements. Once a roof is destroyed, your home becomes inhabitable. No matter how strong our roofs are, they can fall victim to different infestations, including destruction by pesky animals. Because of how firm our roofing materials are, we tend to forget to give our roof the attention it deserves.

It’s, however, advisable to have a regular roof inspection at least twice a year to increase its lifespan. In this article, we’ll look at animals that can harm our roofs and strategies to manage them.

Racoons

Racoons are common in homes with easily accessible food sources like pet food, bird food or open garbage cans. Raccoons, however, don’t attempt home intrusion in warmer seasons except when seeking shelter to give birth to their young. Once they locate a dislodged shingle or make a big hole from a tiny opening, they’ll nest inside attics.

Bats

Bats are common home invaders due to their ability to fit into tiny spaces and nest in your attic. One or two bats might not pose any danger on your roof, but as the number grows, the risk increases. Bat droppings carry a fungus known as Histoplasma capsulatum, which is airborne. Hence, they can move from the attic and get into your living area. Inhaling this fungus can lead to histoplasmosis, a potentially life-threatening lung infection.

Some bats also carry rabies, which can be transmitted to humans and bats from a bite. A well-maintained roof will help in preventing bat invasion into your attic.

Rats

A rat is one of the biggest enemies of your roof. Rats love to live in houses and might decide to dig into your roofing system. Once they manage it, they will invade your attic and other parts of your roof. Simultaneously, they pose a fire hazard by chewing through electrical wires once they breach your roof’s initial layer.

Squirrels

Squirrels are one of the most destructive animals that can invade your roof. This is due to its powerful teeth, capable of prying up asphalt shingles, chewing through wood, and ripping off insulation. Their teeth are constantly growing, and they keep chewing whatever they find. Therefore, if they manage to get into your attic, it can lead to significant problems or massive destruction. Promptly inspect your roof for any external damage when you spot wood chips in unusual locations.
